Gaining Levels

Gaining Levels in The Seventh Sun

As you may have guessed, TSS is a different concept for role-playing. Combining tried and true methods with new and innovative applications, most of our systems are familiar, yet enhanced. Learning and leveling will be no different.

While the system is similar to others you may have used, you will recognize distinct changes.

Experience: How do you gain it and what does it do for you?

There are two different forms of experience (EXP) in TSS: Overall EXP that will help you toward your next level, and Skill EXP that allows you to gain ranks in your skills. The difference in the two types is quite simple.

Think of life. If you learn something or do something, you may not exactly master it, but it adds to your Overall life experience. You know a little more and are a little wiser for it. The same goes for TSS. Just because you're not a master at hiding, if you learn it, you gain life experience. This translates to Overall EXP.

Some things give you more Overall EXP than others will, especially those skills related to your chosen profession. If you're a Tailor you will get the most life experience by doing things associated with tailoring. You will still gain experience for things like hiding or using a sword, but they will not be as rewarding sewing an article of clothing.

The opposite would be true if you were an Armsman. You would gain the most Overall EXP for combat associated actions, and less for making clothing.

Skill EXP is pretty self-explanatory. It's the experience you get from utilizing your skills. Every time you use one of your skills, you will gain EXP toward that skill. This is completely separate from Overall EXP. They are connected so that LEARNING things gives you Overall EXP, but DOING things gives you Skill EXP.

If you're a Rogue, hiding is one of your main skills and something you do quite often. You continue to gain Overall EXP for hiding because it is one of your profession's main skills. You will always get Skill EXP for hiding, though the amount you get each time you hide will become less and less as you get better at it. It will become more challenging to learn hiding the better you get. Meanwhile, you will continue to gain Overall EXP, just at a slightly slower rate.

You can find out a little more on Skill EXP and Overall EXP under the FAQ.

Leveling: What does leveling do for me?

The next question you probably have is what does leveling do for me? As you level, you gain access to more abilities and skills, skill points to help you purchase new skill kits, and attribute points to help you increase your attributes.

As your character matures you will have the ability to learn more difficult skills. Raising you skill level allows you to become better at doing things. You will make tunics easier or kill grendles with less risk. You will be able to work with better fabrics or dodge blows with less effort.

When you level, you will gain new basic skills for your class. You will also gain skill points, which will allow you to purchase 'skill kits'. These kits contain specialized abilities and skills that let you shape and mold your character the way you want.

Merchants may choose skill kits that enhance their import, export, and transport skills. Other kits will enhance your commerce abilities allowing you to open business establishments like shops, inns and taverns, etc.

As a Ranger, you may choose kits that enhance your magical abilities and allow you to use more powerful spells or kits that enhance your ability to track, lay traps or fight better. You can choose combinations, or concentrate entirely in one area, becoming a master at certain things.

Skill kits can contain new skills, bonuses to attributes and current skills, abilities, disabilities, spells, special moves and other modifiers. Before you choose a kit, you will be able to have its contents listed so you can be fully aware of the changes it will make to your character.A side note about gaining skill points; you can gain them both from leveling and from quests.

When you create a character and choose a class and starting kits, all the skills in those kits will provide skill points when you raise skill levels. For example: If you choose to be a Druid and choose kits like Advanced Nature Magic, Animal Taming, and Basic Veterinary, every time you use any of the skills in those kits, you will gain skill points. Future skills gained through new kits will not yield skill points.
